Selling your car? How to clean it for the best price
By Sam W - SoapX Ltd.
A clean car sells faster and gives buyers less room to haggle. Autotrader says a well presented, clean car can help you save over £1,000 when selling. You do not need a professional valet to get there. This guide covers the clean that buyers notice, how to take photos that sell, and the paperwork to have ready.
Why presentation matters
Buyers judge maintenance by what they can see and smell. Autotrader's advice is that a car which is clean inside and out, and smells fine, makes buyers less likely to doubt how it has been looked after. Fix the small things that jump out, such as a broken light, and leave major repairs for the buyer to price in.
The selling clean, in order
- Wheels and arches first. Dirty wheels are the first thing in every photo. Clean the faces, barrels and arch liners. See how to clean alloy wheels.
- Pre rinse and snow foam to lift the grime before you touch the paint.
- Two bucket wash. Top down, one panel at a time, rinsing the mitt after each panel. Our two bucket guide has the method.
- Decontaminate if the paint feels rough. Removing iron fallout and tar spots brings back the gloss. See removing fallout and tar.
- Protect. A quick spray sealant adds gloss for the photos and makes the paint bead water at viewings.
- Glass inside and out, so the car looks bright in every shot.
- Interior. Empty it completely, hoover the seats, carpets and boot, wipe the dash, steering wheel and door cards, and clean the mats.
Get rid of smells
Buyers notice smells before anything else. Remove the cause rather than covering it: empty the bins and door pockets, clean the mats, wipe hard surfaces and air the car with the doors open. A strong air freshener can make buyers wonder what it is hiding.
Photos that sell
Your photos are the first viewing. Autotrader's advice is to shoot a clean car in good light, ideally on a bright day, against a plain background, in landscape and at normal eye height.
| Shot | Why |
|---|---|
| Front three quarter | The best main image. It shows the front and one side at once. |
| Rear three quarter, straight front and rear, side profile | Lets buyers see the whole car and its stance. |
| Each wheel | Clean wheels with no kerb marks build trust fast. |
| Dashboard, seats and boot | Proves the interior matches the outside. |
| Engine bay | A tidy bay suggests a cared for car. |
| Any damage | Showing it up front saves wasted viewings. |
Autotrader says buyers expect to see about 20 images. Wipe off any water marks before you shoot. Our drying guide helps there.
Documents to have ready
- The V5C logbook.
- MOT certificates. Autotrader suggests a new MOT if the current one is close to running out.
- The service book, receipts and invoices for any big work.
- Proof that any finance on the car has been paid off.
When the car sells, GOV.UK says you give the buyer the green new keeper slip from the V5C and tell DVLA, online or by post. If you want to keep a private plate, take it off before you tell DVLA. Any full months of tax left are refunded automatically, and tax does not pass to the buyer.
On the day of a viewing
- Give the car a quick rinse or a waterless wipe down if it has picked up dust.
- Wipe the glass and the steering wheel.
- Have the documents together in one folder.

The V5C logbook, MOT certificates, the service book and receipts for any big work. Be ready to prove any finance has been paid off.
