Car Shampoo pH Database

The pH of 43 car shampoos, snow foams and bike washes from 22 brands, in one place. Every figure is copied from the maker's own data sheet and every row links to that sheet, so you can check it yourself.

How to read the table

• pH on the sheet is the figure as the maker wrote it. A range means the maker gave a range. Where a sheet also gives the pH of a 1% solution, both are shown.
• Band uses the same scale as our pH and surface damage guide. Below 6 is mild acid, 6 to 8 is neutral, above 8 and below 12 is mild alkaline, and 12 or more is strong alkaline. Ranges are placed by their midpoint.
• Concentrate is not the same as the wash. A shampoo used at 1:200 is mostly water in the bucket. Three of the sheets here give both figures. One concentrate at pH 9.8 measures 7 to 9 once diluted to 1%.
• The year matters. Makers change formulas. The year of each sheet is shown, and some are several years old. If a newer sheet exists, tell us and we will update the row.

What the figures show

• 22 of the 43 products sit in the neutral band on their data sheet. 14 are mildly alkaline, 4 are mildly acidic and 3 are strongly alkaline as supplied.
• The products sold as snow foams and pre washes cover the widest spread, from just under 7 to about 13. The name on the bottle tells you nothing about strength, so check the sheet.
• Several wash and protect products sit on the acid side, between about 4.5 and 6.5. That is a formulation choice, not a fault.
• pH is only one line on the sheet. It does not tell you whether a product leaves gloss enhancers behind or how it treats wax. Those depend on the rest of the formula.

How this list was built

• Each figure comes from section 9 of the maker's own safety data sheet, or in one case the maker's product data sheet. No figure comes from a forum, a review or our own testing.
• Sheets dated before 2015 were left out as too old to rely on.
• Links go to the brand's own copy where we found one with a pH figure, and otherwise to a copy of the maker's sheet held by a retailer or distributor.
• Figures are copied as written, with only the wording tidied. Nothing has been rounded into a different band.

Not listed yet

We have not yet found a public data sheet that gives a pH for Gyeon Q2M Bathe, CarPro Reset, or the Simoniz and Halfords shampoos. Meguiar's Hybrid Ceramic Wash and Wax has a sheet, but it gives no pH. If you make or sell a product that should be here, send the data sheet to hello@soapx.co.uk. The same goes for corrections.
