What is on the beginner checklist

The sheet has four parts: a kit list, golden rules, the order of work and a space to note what to change next time.

Section What you tick off
The kit Two buckets, pH neutral car shampoo, two wash mitts, wheel cleaner and a wheel brush, plush drying towel, hose or pressure washer, pre wash or snow foam (optional), spray bottle with dilution marks, glass cleaner and a glass cloth
Do and don't Wash in the shade on cool panels, use a pH neutral car shampoo, use two buckets and a mitt, rinse the mitt after every panel, dry with a clean microfibre towel, read the label and follow its ratio

Every row has space to write the product and ratio you used. The sheet works with any brand, so it suits whatever is already on your shelf.

The minimum kit

Two buckets, a pH neutral shampoo, two wash mitts, a wheel brush with wheel cleaner and a plush drying towel will get you a safe wash. A pressure washer and snow foam make it quicker and reduce contact, but they are upgrades, not essentials. Our guide to what you need and what you can skip goes item by item.

The two rules that matter most

After your first wash

Look at the car in daylight from a low angle. Streaks usually mean the car dried before you got to it. Water spots point to hard water, which the UK water hardness checker can confirm for your postcode. Write it down on the sheet and change one thing next time.

How to get the most from it

  • Print it on A4. It is designed to work in black and white.
  • Write in the product, ratio and dwell time you used. Next time you will know exactly what worked.
  • Laminate a copy and use a whiteboard marker if you do the same job every week.
  • Save the PDF to your phone so the list is always with you.

Quick answers

What do I need to wash my car at home?

Two buckets, a pH neutral car shampoo, two wash mitts, a wheel brush and cleaner, a drying towel and a hose. Grit guards, a pressure washer and snow foam are worthwhile upgrades.

Can I use washing up liquid on my car?

It is best avoided. It is made to strip grease, so it strips wax and sealant too and leaves the paint unprotected.

Is a pressure washer necessary?

No. A hose and a bucket routine work. A pressure washer just makes rinsing faster and lets you use a foam cannon.
