Car interior cleaning checklist: free printable PDF

By - SoapX Ltd.

Free printable interior cleaning checklist from SoapX, checklist 07

An interior done in the wrong order means dust from the dash landing on seats you have just cleaned. This free car interior cleaning checklist follows the order valeters use: everything out, dry work from the top down, hard surfaces, upholstery, then glass last.

What is on the interior cleaning checklist

Section What you tick off
Prep Personal items removed and bagged, mats out, child seats removed (with the owner's permission)
Dry work Vents, seams and switches brushed, vacuum top down
Hard surfaces Dash, doors and console cleaned, screens and displays, pedals and door shuts
Upholstery Fabric: test in a hidden spot, fabric: clean and extract, leather: clean with a soft brush, leather: condition (optional), headlining
Finish Glass inside last, mats cleaned and fully dry before refitting, final check

Every row has space to write the product and ratio you used. The sheet works with any brand, so it suits whatever is already on your shelf.

Top down, dry first, wet last

Gravity decides the order. Brush and vacuum from the headlining down so dust falls onto areas you have not done yet. Do all the dry work before any liquid goes in, because wet dust turns into smears. Glass comes last, so nothing you do afterwards marks it.

Surfaces that need care

Surface Watch out for
Screens and displays Dry microfibre or a screen safe cleaner only. Never household glass cleaner
Headlining Too much liquid loosens the glue and it sags. Product on the cloth, never sprayed direct
Fabric seats Test in a hidden spot first and do not soak the foam underneath
Leather Use a cleaner made for leather and wipe dry. Condition sparingly
Pedals and footwells No slippery dressing anywhere a foot goes

Drying time

An interior that goes back together damp will smell within days. Mats must be fully dry before they go back in, and windows stay open only as long as it is safe to leave the car. Our interior and glass guide has the detail on streak free glass.

How to get the most from it

  • Print it on A4. It is designed to work in black and white.
  • Write in the product, ratio and dwell time you used. Next time you will know exactly what worked.
  • Laminate a copy and use a whiteboard marker if you do the same job every week.
  • Save the PDF to your phone so the list is always with you.

Quick answers

What order should you clean a car interior?

Remove everything, brush and vacuum from the top down, clean hard surfaces, then upholstery, then the glass last.

Can I use glass cleaner on my car's touchscreen?

Check the car's handbook. Most makers recommend a dry microfibre or a screen safe cleaner, as some glass cleaners damage anti glare coatings.

How do I stop my car smelling damp after cleaning?

Use as little liquid as possible, extract or blot fabrics, and let mats and seats dry fully with good airflow before closing the car up.
