pH neutral or alkaline snow foam: which should you use?
By Ollie B - SoapX Ltd.
Snow foam comes in two broad types. pH neutral foam is gentle and safe on protection. Alkaline foam cleans harder. Neither is better. The right one depends on how dirty the car is and what is on the paint.
What pH means for a car
pH is a scale from 0 to 14 that measures how acidic or alkaline a liquid is. Pure water sits in the middle at 7, which is neutral. Below 7 is acidic and above 7 is alkaline.
Most of the dirt on a car is oily. Traffic film is a mix of exhaust soot, oil, tyre rubber and road grime that bonds to the paint. Alkaline cleaners are good at breaking down oil and grease, which is why stronger pre washes sit on the alkaline side.
pH neutral snow foam
- Good at: lifting loose dust, pollen and light dirt on a car that is washed often.
- Kind to: wax, sealants, ceramic coatings, matt paint and wraps. It will not shorten the life of your protection.
- Less good at: thick traffic film, caked winter grime and a car that has gone months without a wash.
Choose neutral for regular maintenance washes on a protected car. If you wash every week or two, this is usually all you need.
Alkaline snow foam
- Good at: breaking down traffic film, bug remains and heavy winter soiling, so more dirt rinses away before the contact wash.
- Watch out for: repeated use can wear down wax and some sealants faster. Strong alkaline foam should never be left to dry, and it is not the right choice for matt wraps or delicate trim unless the maker says so.
- Not needed for: a lightly dusty car with good protection on it.
Choose alkaline when the car is properly dirty, when you are about to polish or apply fresh protection anyway, or as an occasional deep clean.
Which one for your car
- Washed every week or two, with wax or sealant on the paint: pH neutral.
- Ceramic coated: pH neutral for routine washes. Check what your coating maker allows before using anything stronger.
- Matt paint or a vinyl wrap: a gentle foam made for delicate finishes. See our matt and wrap guide.
- Daily driver in winter, covered in salt and road film: a stronger foam made for the season. See our winter guide.
- Not washed for months, or back from a track day: alkaline, with a shorter dwell.
- About to polish or apply fresh protection: alkaline, since removing the old protection is the point.
Four things that matter as much as pH
- Dilution. A foam mixed too strong is harsher than its label suggests, and one mixed too weak will not clean. Use the ratio on the bottle. Our dilution ratio calculator works it out for any bottle size.
- Dwell time. Foam needs a few minutes to work, but it must never dry on the paint. In sun or wind, rinse sooner.
- Thick foam is not the same as cleaning power. Foam as thick as shaving cream looks good, but a slightly wetter foam that runs slowly down the panel carries more dirt away.
- The rinse. Rinse from the top down with plenty of water. The cleaning happens when the dirt leaves with the foam.
How the SoapX formulas line up
No.02 Snow Foam comes in four formulas so you can match the foam to the job.
- Summer (S): the thick, clinging everyday foam. Dilute 1:15.
- Winter (W): our winter favourite for salt season, October to March. Dilute 1:15.
- Extreme (X): heavy duty foam for heavy soiling, with a shorter dwell. Dilute 1:10.
- Delicate (D): a gentle foam that is safe on matt wraps and ceramic coatings. Dilute 1:15.
As a rule, Delicate is the gentlest and Extreme is the strongest. Whatever foam you use, check its label and safety data sheet for the pH and follow the dilution shown.
For a very dirty car, add a pre rinse first. No.01 Pre Rinse and Bug Remover loosens road film and bug splatter before the foam goes on.
Quick answers
Will alkaline snow foam strip my wax?
One wash is unlikely to remove a healthy layer, but regular use of a strong alkaline foam will shorten its life. Use neutral foam for routine washes and keep the stronger foam for when you need it.
Is pH neutral snow foam strong enough?
On a car that is washed often and has protection on it, yes. On months of traffic film, it will leave more for the contact wash to deal with.
Can I use snow foam instead of shampoo?
No. Snow foam is a pre wash that removes loose dirt without touching the car. A contact wash is still needed to remove what is bonded to the paint.
Do I need a pressure washer?
For snow foam, yes. A foam cannon needs a pressure washer to make foam. Our foam cannon guide covers the settings.
