Snow foam explained: how to use a foam cannon properly

By - SoapX Ltd.

Snow foam is a pre wash. Its job is to soften and lift dirt so that more of it rinses away before a mitt ever touches the paint. This guide covers the fitting, the mix, the cannon settings, the method and the mistakes that waste foam.

How to use a snow foam cannon in 5 steps

  1. Fill the cannon bottle with water, then add snow foam at the ratio on the label. For No.02 Snow Foam in Summer, Winter or Delicate that is about 65 ml topped up to 1 litre (1:15).
  2. Attach the cannon to your pressure washer and turn the top dial towards maximum for thicker foam.
  3. Cover the car from the bottom up with a wide fan.
  4. Leave the foam to dwell for a few minutes, but never let it dry on the paint.
  5. Rinse from the top down, then move on to the contact wash.

What snow foam does, and what it does not do

Most wash scratches come from grit being dragged across the paint by a mitt or sponge. Snow foam cuts that risk by removing as much loose dirt as it can before the contact wash starts. The foam clings to the panel, softens road film and carries dirt away as it slides down and is rinsed off.

It does not replace a contact wash. A thin film of bonded grime usually stays behind after foaming, which is why the next step is a two bucket wash. Think of foam as the step that makes the contact wash gentler, not the step that makes it optional.

What you need

  • A pressure washer. A foam cannon cannot make foam from a garden hose alone.
  • A foam cannon with the right fitting. It has to match your pressure washer brand.
  • Snow foam. No.02 Snow Foam comes in four formulas. If you are not sure which one suits your car, the snow foam finder picks one in four questions.
  • Shade and cool panels. Foam dries fast on hot paint.

Get the right fitting

Foam cannons attach to the end of your pressure washer lance or trigger gun. Our Snow Foam Cannon is solid brass, rated up to 160 bar, and comes in Kärcher K series, Nilfisk, Bosch AQT and universal 1/4 inch versions. Pick the one that matches the machine you own.

If you want to swap tools quickly, fit a brass quick connect adaptor once and everything clicks on and off. A short trigger gun makes the cannon far easier to handle around a car than a long factory lance.

How much snow foam to put in the cannon

Follow the ratio on the label. For No.02 Snow Foam that means:

  • Summer, Winter and Delicate (1:15): about 65 ml of foam in a 1 litre cannon bottle, topped up to the line with water.
  • Extreme (1:10): about 90 ml of foam, topped up to the line with water.

Always add the water first and the foam second. Foam poured into an empty bottle froths up as the water goes in and spills over before the bottle is full.

Counting one full cannon bottle as one wash, a 1 litre bottle of Summer, Winter or Delicate makes 16 washes and a 5 litre container makes 80. Extreme makes 11 and 55. From the 5 litre container that works out at about £0.44 a wash for Summer and Winter at the current list prices. The product planner shows how long a bottle lasts at your own wash routine, and the dilution ratio calculator handles any other bottle size.

Mixing stronger than the label does not clean better in any way you will notice. It only empties the bottle sooner.

Cannon settings

A foam cannon has two adjustments.

  1. The top dial sets how rich the foam is. Turn it towards maximum for thicker foam and back it off for a wetter foam.
  2. The front nozzle twists from a narrow jet to a wide fan. Use the wide fan for body panels and narrow it for arches and grilles.

Thicker is not always better. Foam as thick as shaving cream looks good, but a slightly wetter foam that runs slowly down the panel carries more dirt away with it. Aim for foam that clings for a few minutes and creeps downwards.

If the foam is thin and watery even with the dial at maximum, check the mix first. After that, the usual cause is an orifice that does not suit the flow of your pressure washer. The foam cannon orifice calculator tells you which size matches your machine.

Applying it: foam from the bottom up, rinse from the top down

  1. Treat the worst areas first. If the car is very dirty, spray No.01 Pre Rinse over the lower panels and front end to tackle bugs and road film.
  2. Foam from the bottom up. The sills, lower doors and rear bumper are the dirtiest parts of the car. Foaming them first gives them the longest dwell time. Work around the car in overlapping passes and finish with the roof.
  3. Let it dwell. Three to five minutes suits Summer, Winter and Delicate. Give Extreme a shorter dwell. Never let foam dry on the paint. In warm weather or a breeze, rinse sooner.
  4. Use the dwell time. While the foam works, go round badges, grilles, fuel flaps and window seals with a soft detailing brush.
  5. Rinse from the top down. Start at the roof and chase the foam down the car with plenty of water so the dirt leaves with it. Keep the nozzle 30 cm or more from the paint.
  6. Move straight on. Start the contact wash while the car is still wet.

Which formula

Summer is the everyday foam. Winter helps lift road salt. Extreme is for very heavy dirt. Delicate is for wraps, matt paint and fresh coatings. Each has its own page if you want the detail:

The 3 Step Wash Rig Kit bundles pre rinse, foam and shampoo in the same formula. Not sure whether you need a gentle or a stronger foam? Read pH neutral or alkaline snow foam.

Common mistakes

  • Foaming in direct sun. The foam dries on the panel before you can rinse it. Work in the shade or wait for the evening. The car wash weather checker tells you whether today is a good day.
  • Foam first, water second. The bottle froths over. Water goes in first.
  • Starting at the roof. The clean upper panels get the longest dwell and the dirty lower panels get the shortest. Start low.
  • Holding the lance too close. Keep the tip 30 cm or more from the paint when you rinse.
  • Skipping the contact wash. Foam removes loose dirt. The film underneath still needs a mitt.
  • Putting the cannon away dirty. Run clean water through it for a few seconds when you finish so dried foam does not block it.

No pressure washer? Apply pre rinse with the 1.5L pump sprayer instead. Once the foam is rinsed off, move on to the two bucket wash.

Quick answers

How much snow foam do I put in a foam cannon?

Follow the ratio on the label. At 1:15, about 65 ml of snow foam in a 1 litre cannon bottle, topped up with water. At 1:10, about 90 ml. Add the water first so the bottle does not foam over.

How long should I leave snow foam on the car?

A few minutes. Three to five minutes suits most foams, with a shorter dwell for stronger formulas. Never let it dry on the paint, and rinse sooner on a warm or windy day.

Do I rinse the car before snow foam?

You do not have to. Foam applied to a dry car is not thinned by water already sitting on the panel. If the car is caked in mud, rinse the worst of it off first.

Why is my snow foam thin and watery?

Check three things in order. First the mix, then the top dial on the cannon, then the orifice size, which has to suit the flow of your pressure washer.

Do I still need to wash the car after snow foam?

Yes. Snow foam is a pre wash that removes loose dirt. A thin film of bonded grime usually stays behind, and a two bucket contact wash removes it.

Can I use snow foam without a pressure washer?

Not through a foam cannon, which needs a pressure washer to work. Without one, apply a pre rinse with a pump sprayer, let it dwell and rinse it off before the contact wash.
