Sunday Service: the weekly two bucket wash routine
By Ollie B - SoapX Ltd.
Rule 5 of the Two Bucket Gang code is Sunday is Service. One proper wash a week is easier on the paint than a rescue job once a month, because the dirt never gets time to build up and bond. This is the routine, in order, with rough timings and the mix for each step.
How often should you wash your car?
There is no single rule. These are sensible starting points for UK conditions.
| Your car | How often |
|---|---|
| Daily driver, parked outside | Every week or two |
| Any car on gritted winter roads | Weekly if you can, and rinse the arches every time |
| Garaged or weekend car | After it has been used, or when it looks dirty |
| Bird droppings, tree sap or bug splatter | Straight away. Do not wait for Sunday |
Washing often does not harm the paint. Washing badly does. A weekly two bucket wash is far kinder to a finish than a monthly scrub with one bucket.
Before you start
- Check the weather. The car wash weather checker helps you pick the moment.
- Find shade and cool panels. Hot paint dries shampoo before you can rinse it.
- Lay out the kit first. Buckets, mitts, brushes and a clean drying towel, all within reach before any water goes on.
- Put the phone away until the bucket check.
The Service, in order
| Step | What you do | Rough time |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Wheels, one at a time, with their own tools | 15 min |
| 2 | Pre rinse the lower panels and front end | 5 min |
| 3 | Snow foam, dwell, then rinse from the top down | 10 min |
| 4 | Two bucket contact wash from the top down, with a bucket check before you rinse | 20 min |
| 5 | Final rinse from the top down | 5 min |
| 6 | Dry | 10 min |
| 7 | Rinse out the buckets and pack down | 5 min |
That is about 70 minutes for a medium hatchback that is washed regularly. A first wash, a bigger car or a crime scene takes longer.
The mix for a normal Sunday
| Step | Product | Ratio | In practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre rinse | No.01 Pre Rinse and Bug Remover | 1:10 | About 90 ml per litre of mix, in a pump sprayer |
| Snow foam | No.02 Snow Foam | 1:15 | About 65 ml topped up to 1 litre in the foam cannon |
| Contact wash | No.05 Contact Shampoo | 1:200 | 100 ml in a 20 litre WASH bucket |
These are the ratios for the Summer, Winter and Delicate formulas. Use Summer in the warmer months and Winter from October to March. The Extreme formula is stronger and is diluted less, so check the label. The dilution ratio calculator covers any container, and the cost per wash calculator shows what each Service costs you.
All three come together in the 3 Step Wash Rig Kit.
Notes on each step
- Wheels. Always first, so brake dust and dirty spray never land on clean paint. Our alloy wheel guide covers the brushes. If your brushes get rinsed in a bucket, read about the three bucket method.
- Pre rinse and foam. Apply both from the bottom up, give them a few minutes and never let them dry on the paint. Rinse from the top down. Our snow foam guide has the settings.
- Contact wash. WASH and RINSE, a grit guard in each, one panel at a time in straight lines. The full method is in our two bucket method guide.
- Bucket check. Before the final rinse, photograph both buckets beside the car. Tag @soapx_uk with #SoapXLab.
- Dry. Straight away, with a clean towel laid flat and pulled gently across the panel. See our guide to drying without swirls.
What to add once a month
- Top up the protection with No.08 Wax and Sealant on clean, dry paint.
- Clean the glass inside and out and wipe down the interior. Our interior and glass guide has the order of work.
What to add every few months
Decontaminate. If the paint feels rough after washing, or the wheels show orange spots, it is time for an iron and tar treatment. Our fallout and tar guide covers it.
After the Service
- Rinse the buckets, grit guards and brushes and let them dry.
- Put mitts and towels through the machine at 40°C with no fabric softener.
- Store the buckets with their lids on, so grit cannot settle inside before next Sunday.
If it rains ten minutes later
It is not your fault. The official advice is to wash anyway.
No hose, no driveway, no free Sunday
- Hosepipe ban or no outside tap. Our bucket only routine works without a hose or pressure washer.
- Sunday does not work for you. Pick another day and keep it. The Service is the habit, not the date.
Quick answers
How often should I wash my car in the UK?
Every week or two suits most daily drivers. Wash more often in winter when the roads are gritted, and deal with bird droppings and sap straight away.
Is it bad to wash your car every week?
No, as long as the method is safe. Swirl marks come from poor technique, not from washing often. Regular washing means lighter dirt and less contact.
How long does a proper car wash take?
About 70 minutes for wheels, pre rinse, snow foam, a two bucket wash and drying on a medium hatchback. Allow longer for a larger or dirtier car.
What is Sunday Service?
It is the Two Bucket Gang name for the weekly wash. Buckets out, foam on, phone away until the bucket check.
What is the best time of day to wash a car?
Early morning or evening, out of direct sun, when the panels are cool and the shampoo will not dry before you rinse it.
